I'm working for an engineering firm (we do some consultancy) and one of our clients has asked us to do a CHAZOP on a plant that another company is building for him.

I've attended and even facilitated numerous HAZOPs and SIL assessments, but I've never been to a CHAZOP. I've got a very vague idea of what might be in it, but feedback would be welcome on the following. The client doesn't have much idea of what he wants - I think someone has just told him he ought to do one.

1. Is CHAZOP just a buzzword that was invented back in the 90's and no-one does any more, or is it a valuable and useful technique?

2. I can kind of guess what a CHAZOP might address, that is the kind of detailed control and electrical failures that are typically ignored in HAZOP. Can anyone give a bit more detail?

3. Are there any recognised standards or practices for the conduct of a CHAZOP, like there are for HAZOP and safety instrumented function assessment?

4. If it's similar to a HAZOP, do you break the plant up into nodes and apply guidewords? How do you select the nodes? Do you apply the Cause>Consequence>Safeguard>Action technique like you would in a HAZOP, or is it less structured than that?

I have done a bit of googling but the whole topic seems to be a bit of a mystery.
