A fabricator is proposing using cramic back-up bars on CP moment connections. Says that's what he based his bid on. I never heard of them. Anybody know anything about them?

Ceramic backing is an acceptable method. Some welders experience more difficulty in achieving a CP weld without root discontinuities in using the ceramic backing.

Assuming you will have nondestructive testing (either radiographic or ultrasonic) done on the welds, this should not be an issue. Please note that the welder should be qualified to this procedure in accordance with the required standard, such as AWS D1.1

I beleive AWS D1.1 requires removal of backing and back gouging for a weld with ceramic use. If not, do it anyway.
