Hi guys:

I have been buying bearing lockwashers for years from a local source. Well, now they have gone out of business and I can't find another source. Does anyone know of somewhere I can purchase these washers in small quantities?

The kind I'm talking about are the ones that look sort of like giant star washers. They have a bent tang on the inside that fits into a groove in the shaft. They mate with a bearing locknut that has four slots around its circumference. The nut is tightened against the inner race of the bearing and one of the outer tangs of the washer is bent into a nut slot and keeps the nut from coming off. They are an AFBMA standard item and go by "W-00" for the washers and "N-00" for the nuts.

Ironically McMaster-Carr has the nuts, but apparently not the washers, which I find strange. Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would think any company that makes wheel
bearing would have these. Timken etc.
Have you tried the auto parts stores?

Have you tried calling McMaster Car and asking their sources. They can be tight lipped but in this situation it seems like they should carry both components.

Well, yeah, I knew about them. They manufacture the washers. But I actually want to buy them a few at a time. Who actually *sells* the washers? It would be nice to find an online source (like McMaster-Carr, e.g.).

I sent an e-mail to them to see if they have a distributor in my area. Thanks for the link.

Doesn't anyone in this group use these locknuts and washers? What other methods do you use to properly seat bearings on the shaft?

SKF also sells the washers in addition to Whittet Higgins.

Our local vendor for a lot of this stuff is either Kaman or Motion Industries. Both are large companies that offices all over the place.

Yeah I used them at my last company. We were using them to hold a cable in place that was actuating from a lever. We got ours from American Fastener. They worked great!

Well there are other ways to seat bearings on shafts. I worked at an automotive and heavy truck stearing manufacturer and we used bearings on shafts all the time. For the heavy truck market we would roll a spline on the shaft and cut a groove before the spline. Then we would press the bearing on the shaft and place a retaining ring in the shaft. The automotive group would press the bearing on a splined shaft and then place an o ring in a groove. Either way worked for us, but the retaining ring was the most cost effective and strongest.
