Beam Splices 1

When you have beams with 135 deg closed ties you are required by the ACI code to have one rebar on each corner of the tie. If you have 2 no.8 at bottom and 2 no.8 bars at top how would you keep the 4 bars on the corners just after a splice? With an offset lap splice? Additional rebar? I have usually seen straight lap splices and wonder if this is acceptable for this condition?

Either the bars or the splice can be in the corner. A pair of bars in the corner is also OK.

I am refering to what happens justa after the splice,if the rebars are in the corner then just after the rebars if you have a straight splice you will not have the splice rebars at the corners. View it from a top elevation, you have before the splice a rebar at each corner, at the splice two rebars on each corner,just after the splice the no 8 splice bars will not be at the corner.

Small bends will be developed by the ties or the longitudinal bars can be made to sit next to the spliced bar. A few feet of "out of the corner" location is normal and if the elevation or level of the bars are correct does not affect the bending strength. Columns have offset bends designed at splice locations but I have never detailed the beam reinforcement for splice offsets.

You got to the point. I understand the issue of arm reduction in offset bars, so we keep them in the same plane altough splices are usually required at continuity steel or areas or minimum stress. I am a contractor doing work in Puerto Rico, a registered P.E. but not a structural designer. I appreciate the share of knowledge provided by you, Thanks a lot.
