Can anyone recommend a good, easy-reading reference which covers selecting beam sizes and types for handling simple loads? Thx...

Design Of Steel Structures
Gaylord, Gaylord & Stallmeyer
Mc Graw Hill

is a nice book and covers lots of steel subjects.

An author named Harry Parker put out a series of books called "Simplified Design of..." for various materials such as steel, wood, and concrete. It was published by John Wiley & Sons.

First choice:
Gaylord and Gaylord,
but this requires some knowlege of steel structural design and is not recommended as the first book

you may use the following together
1. Steelm Design
by Macormic (guess thats the way the author spells)
2. Steel Desing using LRFD
Rokach (Schaum Series) Good Book

Hope you'll find them useful

Then, of course, there is the AISC Manual of Steel Construction... Imagineer

I second Imagineer on this one. The charts and examples in the AISC Manual are usually very user friendly.
