Asking about the pros/cons of footings for building garages (with slab on grade) behind basement walls.
Is it better to use a lintel from the basement wall to span across the overdig to get to good undisturbed soils.
Or is it better to step the footing up from the basement footing to the footing for garage walls.
Experiences?
Thanks.

WE usually do belled piers bearing at the same elevation as the house basement footing, with a perimeter grade beam. Typically this results in equal movement of foundations between the house and the garage provided the surface drainage is adequate.

My experience is the stepping up of the garage "wall" footings on undisturbed ground. Then all the forms are tied together and concrete placement done with one session.

Thank you all for replies. When I have visited sites to evaluate cracks in bricks at this type of condition, typically have seen the lintel bridging across the overdig. Again, thank you.

I have done it bot ways. Make sure you deal with the fact that a portion of your slab will be uncompacted fill.
