hello people

so referring back to this thread - - if i have a pqr that qualifies a double sided cjp with backgouging and the wps refers to a single sided cjp with backing strip without backgouging is the wps applicable and does this comply under the code?

thanks

If the groove detail is a prequalified groove as shown in figures 3.3 or 3.4, no additional tresting is required as long as all the other conditions of prequalification per D1.1 are met. If all the conditions of prequalification are not met, a new WPS must be qualified by testing.

thanks gtaw - i dont work with this standard often.

gtaw,
Regarding backing and back gouging: can they be used interchangeably ? In other word : can we use PQR with backing to weld with back gouging or vice versa ?

Yes. Depositing weld metal on one side, backgouging to sound metal, and then welding the other side is considered welding with backing in the eyes of AWS.

Yes, the WPS is qualified with backing or with back gouging. That isn't the case for welder performance qualification. There is no standard AWS structural performance test that includes back gouging the second side as part of the qualification test. A welder that qualifies using a backing bar is qualified to weld with backing or with back gouging, but there is no back gouging permitted on the test coupons while taking the qualification test.

Best regards - Al
