OK, so lets start the debate on mechanical testing.
When a mechanical test calls for impact or charpy testing at 1/4t and 1/2t, what is the actual location of the test sample.
If the part starts as a solid bar, yet has a finished geometry with a thru hole, then testing at the center or 1/2t yields results of material that is ulitmately removed. Also it is harder to achieve the mechanical results at center of the bar with relation to the outer moreso test locations.
So the question really is.... When performing mechanical testing, is the 1/4t, 1/2t designation intended to be taken with the geometry of the RAW, OR should the geometry of the finihsed part be the driver?
Please provide reference to any industry specifications that state such examples.
