My group at work has been given the job of coming up with a new part numbering scheme so we can more closely align activities between a few of our divisions.

At the moment the two main sites both have their own ‘smart’ numbering scheme.

Also every part used has to have a company number assigned. Not just parts for which there are drawings but also hardware etc. (don’t get me started)

We buy in a lot of components but historically they haven’t created SCD/VCD etc for most of these although we’re thinking maybe they should.

Our first idea was essentially a dumb, sequential numbering scheme for all drawings, with maybe some kind of smart scheme for the standard hardware.

We’ve been told by materials that we need to maintain some smartness because they find it helpful.

Anyone have any good examples of numbering schemes they’d like to share?

I agree with MadMango.
The part number should not have any ties to anything outside the engineering dept. Engineering/QA should devise a part numbering system that will work for them, other depts ... deal with it.
Also ... A part/assy number should always match its drawing number.

KENAT,

Yes, I do consulting. Yes, this is the niche market I work best in. No, I do not charge for email consultation so long as it doesn't take a significant amount of time.

I don't want to detract from the value of the post to the entire eng-tips community; I just know that examples and some detailed information would greatly help in this situation and posting that information in a public forum does not bode well.

Ctopher, in theory I pretty much agree.

In practice when to try and enforce that would probably cost a lowly peon like me my job I'm thinking of being a bit more pragmatic.

Like I said a couple of posts ago, maybe I should have called the thread 'least bad' not perfect.

Thanks Ctopher,

One of the posts had a link to a report which may inspire me to push the dumb system a bit harder.

Still think we'll end up with a compromise tho'.[sad]
