Ammunition Shell

Can anyone tell me where online I might find a detailed schematic of an ammunition shell. I need to see the breakdown of the cap, casing, bullet, etc.

Is the purpose of the rim to hold the casing while the bullet fires?

Since the casing is behind the load, it moves backward with the weapon when bullet fires.

So, the rim is a means of ensuring that the primer is placed in the proper location relative to the hammer.

rims usually appear on straight-wall cartridges, which means that without a rim, there is no way to ensure that that the cartridge doesn't slide too far down the barrel for the firing pin to engage.

How is the rim physically engaged?

The rim simply sits against the back side of the cylinder and keeps the cartridge from sliding forward down the hole in the cylinder. The frame is flared out in the back to keep the cartridges from sliding back out.

Guys - the rim is for extraction. It only works for locating on a "Rimmed" cartridge [i.e. 38 special, 30-30 winchester] Look up "headspace" in a firearms dictionary.
"rimless" rounds {i.e. 30-06} locate on the shoulder.
