Hello, I have been working in factories for approx 15 years dealing with diff. brands of PLC's. There were large machine and small machines, however they all had there own PLC or were hard wired to another machine. I had to change jobs and now am dealing with Allen bradley. The problem is they use Devicenet, Ethernet, Controlnet Profibus & Interbus. These are new to me. Could some one simplify how each work.

Any help appreciated!
Thanks Nod

Hello;
These terms are nnames or different types of communications busses. These busses can be used for communicating between the PLC and the HMI, or between the PLC and the I/O modules. In this case the I/O is usually refered to as "remote I/O". It is I/O that does not reside within the local rack(s) of the CPU.

DeviceNet is a "open" communications network to link small I/O devices to a central processor.

EtherNet is the same communications network used by most PC's. Can be used for both I/O and interprocessor communications and HMI.

ControlNet is a new "open" high speed communications network used by both I/O and inter processor communications and HMI's.

Profibus & Interbus are "open" communications networks which can handle more I/O than deviceNet but are slower than ControlNet. I believe that both od these got their start in Europe.

Djs, I appreciate the info!
