My company developed a clamp that fits around a vertical pipe to allow a connection to wind brace member (acts in tension and compression) that comes in at an angle. This clamp uses a single thru-bolt to close the clamp and secure the wind brace to the clamp/vertical pipe.
We had this part tested by a third party to determine the ultimate capacity of the assembled pipe, brace, and clamp in tension (90 degrees from vertical), compression (90 degrees from vertical) and against sliding, parallel to vertical.
Multiple tests of each were performed and the data was consistent. The minimum failure loads in each direction were:
Tension: 7,435 lb
Compression: 10,730 lb
Sliding: 1,285 lb
Now that I have this information, I would like to apply an appropriate safety factor to each direction so that I can prove this part works for my client. Can anyone help me determine the safety factors that should be applied, along with a reference to the AISC manual so that I can demonstrate to my client that the safety factors are appropriate?
