1930 Era Floor beam callout 3

Hi guys, I have a project in a building constructed in 1930. The Owner wants to convert the mezzanine into public assembly usage. Original use was office space. The original drawings describe the floor joists as 10" J 8c L's @ 8.96. Right now access is non-existent due to a plaster hard lid ceiling. Before I direct the contractor to do some selective demo the owner would like to know more info. Anybody have or know where to find info on these joists?

Probably a designation for section from a Jones and Laughlin Steel catalog. The company name was often abbreviated "J&L". Without the catalog, can't offer any further detail, sorry.

Thanks anyway SlideRule.....Jones & Laughlin was bought out in the 60's (I think) and since then a succesion of companies ending with Arcelor Mittal have swallowed each other. J&L historical info seems to have been long lost. Since they are hard to read I may have misread the old plans. It may be "J Bc L's." I think they are an early proprietary bar joist. SJI first published a Standard Specification in 1928 but not every manufacturer joined up.

AISC had a book of ancient shapes. I don't know if its still available.

They have it online for members, but I am not a member now.

With SlideRule's hint, I looked in my 1st edition AISC steel manual from 1930. Lo and behold, there's a page on J and L Junior Beams. The 10" beam weighs 8.96 #/ft.
