NEW TO THE PAPER WORK INVOLVED WITH WPS PQR .ECT. ALL MY EMPLOYS JUST TOOK A 3G 1IN PLATE NO BACKING GMAW ROOT FLUX FILL AND CAP ALL PASSED BUT AFTER SENDING MY WPS TO THE COMPANY THAT WE HAVE JOBS THROUGH AND AFTER THEM SENDING THE WPS TO BECHTEL. IT WAS REVIEWED AND SENT BACK STATING "ADDRESS MODE OF METAL TRANSFER FOR GMAW . NOTE THAT FOR SHORT CIRCUIT MODE PRE QUALIFIED WPS'S ARE NOT ACCEPTED" THAT BEING STATED AS NEEDING CORRECTED. ON THE WPQ TRANSFER MODE IS SHORT CIR/GLOBULAR IM CONFUSED AS WHAT IT SHOULD STATE ANY HELP ON THIS SUBJECT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED

So your welding procedure qualification record stated that both short circuiting transfer and globular transfer was used. then your WPS must state the same. I wonder if you know the welding parameters required for short arc transfer. If you could provide more information regarding shielding gas, welding filler metals used and amps and volts used, a more detailed answer could be provided.

For FCAW process to be "Prequalified" the power supply must be constant voltage and so noted on the WPS per AWS D1.1.

Is it a pre-qualified WPS or do you have a PQR ?

GMAW short circuiting transfer is not prequalified. A WPS must be qualified by testing if GMAW-S is used for production or for performance qualification.

Al,
I was more concerned with the "no backing" but the OP has not returned,
Cheers,

Same concern, but you addressed the backing issue. What also caught my eye was welding the root in the vertical position using GMAW for the root. The inference is short circuiting transfer may have been used (if not pulse transfer), thus the WPS is not prequalified. While the poster mentioned PQR, I'm not convinced the WPS is bcked by a valid PQR based on the "conversation" and information provided.

Best regards - Al
