We are designing a building with one way joists resting on wide beams up to 66" wide by 16 1/2" deep, some times deeper beams. Most beams are 40" wide. The beams are supported on minimum of 18" by 18" columns. In some cases we have 22" by 22" columns. What needs to be done at sides of the column where the wide beam runs by? Should the overhang of the beam on each side be checked for flexure and shear? In somes cases a joist rib will align with the column centerline.
