Hello all.

I'm working on developing a MIQA program for some blend tanks we have (<5000gal). There is no reaction that occur in these tanks - just adding a bunch of materials and mixing them together and pumping them out.

In the past, my company inspected these tanks to STI001 which is for aboveground storage tanks. This doesn't seem right to me since they aren't storage tanks in the standard definition. I'm not sure if we should be inspecting these to STI001, API653 (atmospheric storage tank) or API 510. We don't have much information on them but there's no note of them being pressure vessels or having any sort of rating.

Any suggestions on which standard I should be using or is it a case of as long as I have good justification, I can pick any?

Thanks.

The above statement implies , the tanks are ground supported . However ,you did not mention the pressure..If the tanks atmospheric or low pressure, I will suggest you to develop MIQA program as per API 653 and API RP 579 Fitness-For-Service . The recommended practice API RP 579 covers ( API 650.620. BPV codes, ASME piping..)

Good Luck..

Testing and inspecting these mixer pots/vats to either API 653 or 510 would be aligned with industry practices.
My go to is if the equipment has a floor with either an annular ring or a floor plate extension type floor, API 653. If it has a shaped head, then API 510. Formed, but flat bottomed tank floors (Horton bottom) is a tank type.
Neither code excludes being used to inspect this equipment under its' banner, and either is commonly used. Client or the inspecting authority or contractor will be more comfortable with one or three other, or may not have a preference, though the 653 calculations may be easier to adapt to the equipment.
