Greetings fellow tech folks. I am an audio engineer by profession; however I am also the GC on my home I am building here in Austin. Part of the work I will do personally will be to run all low voltage wire for security, data and telecom. I have done this for years on previous homes, both mine and friends. Although not a daily puller of cable, I am quite capable of doing this job. I see a number of “ALL IN ONE” cables today, however our home is only 2k sq feet, and all the termination points aren’t that far, so I am not really wanting to go that route right now on this home due to the expense of the cable… 6-11 dollars a foot!!

So I plan on pulling a ton of CAT5e/Cat6, Quad Shield RG6, audio in 4 conductor 16g-stranded etc.. The question I have is FIBER I want to run fiber, but unsure of what is the standard for residential construction. What will telecom companies like Verizon/FIOS require for me to have in the walls for distribution etc… Does anyone know what should be run at this point, since it’s so new? I find surplus fiber, or bulk fiber on eBay all the time, which is quite reasonable in price ($400 for 1500 feet…) but before I go and purchase something like this for the build, I want to make sure I am not spinning my wheels installing something that can’t be used.

Any help would be appreciated.

Question is who in your area can supply services of fiber to your home to even take advantage of having it installed.Cat 5e and 6 can support all that most residental areas have access to.Unless your using it with in the home to communicate one device to another.
