Does anyone know of an inexpensive way to measure well water depth from the top of a well casing. Examples:the use of Infared; Ultrasonic; Radar

Something that is relatively accurate but not priced so as to render it an impossibilitie for a home owner to install?

I want to install a devise permanently and tie it to my computer or a separate meter mounted within the house that I can frequently look at and see just how much water; how many gallons or at least what the height of standing water is which I can create an automatic calculator for to convert from.

I was introduced to Endress + Hauser Instrumentation once, but they seem geared more towards industrial applications. You could check out their web site at They have ultrasonic, capacitance, microwave, tuning fork style, etc. methods of measuring levels.

Or if you want simple, perhaps a float on a rod actuating a switch or photo-eye would give you the data you want.
