Well we are back with another question because we do not understand the functions capable in this program. Apparently it not as "user friendly" as they claim. We have another question that I am sure all of you can most likely answer.

We are designing a structure that requires us to take into account a weld along a plate. The structure that needs to be welded is an akward design that we though should be in a solid form. But we found that you are unable to place a force on a solid is it better to make the back into a plate? Our major concern is the the weld design though. We have looked through all of the provided manuals with the program and were unable to locate the directions on how to weld.

We are wondering if anyone knows the proper way to do a weld. If you could also state if we should use a beam to weld we would be thankful. We would really appreciate your input on the design concept.

Thanks

in these sort of problems it is unlikely that this software will have an outline regarding the design of the weld for this application. You will need to look at the interface of set of elements and determine the forces along the line and then calculate the weld to see if the throat thickness is ok.

for your query regarding shells or solids then it is probably wise to use shells as you can get your results back for bending and shear - remember in solid elements there is no degree of freedom for bending.

You will need to investigate whether interface can carry a moment and if it does not then release the moment dof on the element node - you can do this on staad but you can research how - i think its in the manual.

i hope this helps [afro2]
