Volcanic Eruption

When we were in Hawaii in September 2018, we had originally booked a tour of the 'Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park' but about a month after we confirmed the trip, which included a four island cruise starting in Oahu and ending in Kauai, with Hawai'i, the 'Big Island', being one of the stops, the Kīlauea volcano started erupting and they modified the tour because they had to close the park for several months (it was reopened the day after we left for the next island). However, we still got to see a lot of the Big Island, just not any volcanoes up-close and personal.

Sorry you missed it, John...

Is this a God level failure? I can't see any professional oversight or regulatory authority having jurisdiction in the matter. Perhaps geotechnical but what is the foundation?

probably related to plate tectonics... and the forces they rely on...

I think this is a perfect place for this thread; it's just a matter of noting that Engineering Failures & Disasters can easily be read as (Engineering Failures) & (Disasters), or Engineering (Failures & Disasters). I think the latter is a bit redundant, since engineering failures are often disasters, so it actually might make more sense to be the former.

And, I think, a previous thread about an eruption in the Canary Islands (?) already resides here.

Just a WAG... I know it didn't belong in the Structural forum... but interesting news, anyway. [pipe]

I'd put it there, but someone would whine about me double posting...[ponder]

It's not an engineering failure (is it?). Nor is it a disaster (look it up).

But it IS interesting!

"I'm going to dump molten rock all over the place, and there's nothing you humans can do about it, except get out of the way. I've got brothers who spew ash everywhere--ya wanna tempt me?"

Strictly speaking, if it was a volcano, then it is not a failure... it did exactly what it was supposed to do. [pipe]

In my younger days, I once hooked a 20lb Atlantic Cod. We pulled and pulled but it just took that bait and held on to it at the bottom ... until finally ... the gears broke. We called the mechanic and he said that shouldn't have happened. Perhaps it was a defect.

It's of course well known that volcanos are widely used as locations for the secret lairs of nefarious organizations bent on world domination.

However, since the builders of such lairs rarely submit plans for review we are unlikely to find the information needed to perform our typical post-disaster analysis.

I would prefer we keep these discussions to engineering, else the topic is wide open. The eruption is not engineering related, but perhaps members have engineering proposals to mitigate the effect?

Waiting for someone to blame climate change for the eruption. Oh wait, it is the other way around.

Careful Hokie... with the changes due to added water and shifting of location of it, there may be some tectonic plate effect.

I think of them as pressure relief valves.

Einstein gave the same test to students every year. When asked why he would do something like that, "Because the answers had changed."
