Variation in A449 bolt tensile strength. 1

Does the tensile strength of A449 bolts vary by diameter? I know that you use a different tensile strength to design bolts 1" and under than you do for 1 1/2" to 1 3/4".

For example, when designing 1 3/4" diam. to 3" diam bolts you based the design on a minimum tensile strength of 90 ksi. However would a 2" diam bolt have the same minimum tensile strength as a 3" bolt?

I don't have a copy of ASTM A 449 handy, but it should be referenced in this specification as to the variability in mechanical properties as a function of product form size. If it is not mentioned in this specification, you are permitted to use the same value.

The answer to your last question is yes. The ASTM standard uses the abbreviation incl. to mean inclusive, so that the entire range of 1 3/4" to 3" has the same requirements for hardness and strength: 183-235 HB and 90 ksi respectively.

The yield and strength values are shown in AISC-ASD 9th edition Table 1-C, page 4-4...and they are based on diameter range.
