U-Shape Needles?

If I had to guess I'd say the two girders and the needles form a U shape if you look at a section through the wall.
 
I get into masonry shoring design pretty frequently and I have never heard of U shaped beams.

I don't think the U is in reference to the needle beam's section, since it can vary quite a bit.

I think the others are right about the U being in reference to the shoring configuration in some way. Maybe because the shoring posts and needle beam make an upside down U?
