Just to vent. . .

Both ASTM standards for triaxial testing and drained direct shear testing cite the interpretation of friction angle and cohesion as outside the standards (i.e., the're professional services). I'm always receiving laboratory certificates (i.e., non-professional documents) that show friction angle and cohesion values as interpreted from the lab's computer.

How do I process such professional interpretation in a non-professional document?

I don't. I will not allow an engineer to co-opt the lab's value. I'm almost to the point where I'm going to require a PE stamp on these certificates.

Not to be a pedant, that is. . .

We provide cursory interpretations on our reports but they include a disclaimer-the results must be reviewed by a professional engineer.

IMHO,At the end the PE is the one who uses the data provided by the lab, so the PE is totally responsible of the numbers used in the calculations for recommendations . The PE can or cannot use the numbers provided by the lab.

I understand, Okiryu. Unfortunately, in typical instances, the geotechnical report just co-opts the lab's published value without any claims on strain compatibility, failure, stress, etc. It's as if, the friction angle is a unique thing that's determined by the lab.

Rant over. . .
