Hi,

I am testing some nylon-based abrasives, and some of them leave nylon on the surface of the work piece during use, and shows as a black “smear”. I am trying to quantify this problem, and am looking for a method of measuring the area covered by the nylon that is quick, easy and as always cheap!!!

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Thanks in advance,
Jaq

I am not sure if this qualifies as Cheap or easy, but it sounds like a Machine Vision System using a blob tool could help you with your application. These systems are available from $2,000-$10,000 per camera. If that is too much money and you are looking for something to try offline on a very small number of samples, you could take a black and white picture of the smear then import the image into a demo version of the software. If you are looking to buy, I would suggest Cognex ( If you are looking to do the work offline, Cognex sells an offline package for about $500. If that is still too much, DVT ( gives away trial versions of their on their web site. Not as good as the Cognex, but you can't beat the price.

Good Luck!

Thanks!

I thought it might be something along those lines. I will have to see if I can persuade someone to part with some money!!!!

Thanks again
