Straight-sided Splines

I was wondering if anyone knew how much wear is acceptable on an 10T. External Straight-Sided Spline before a replacement is necessary. The Spline width was originally .540/.538" when new, I was wondering how much wear is acceptable. Is there a standard? The O.D. is 3.485" and the R.D. is 3.000".

What are you using a straight sided spline for and or with?
I assume your are using it with a side fit? How did the
wear come into existence. Was there execessive clearance
in the fits to begin with?

The spline shaft was used in a Byrd Planetary Reducer. It was a side fit with no excessive clearance when new. When the shaft came to me, it had been running for many years and had excessive wear.

Georg,
The amount of play is up to the user and what liability
exists if it fails in place. I would assume if 1/4 of the
thickness was gone, it would be excessive structurally.
Can the spline be reworked to accomodate an 8 module
30 degree involute spine or reworked to a double keyway
design? Does the application reverse in direction or turn
only one way? If it turns only in one direction, possibly 10
shims of equal thickness could be driven into the 10 spaces
and remove the backlash. How damaged is the mating internal
spline?
