I was wondering if mechanical abbrasion of some sort is necisary to facilitate the transfer of charge between two materials with different positions on the triboelectric scale. I tend to associate static charge transfer with some type of rubbing motion; such as the ballon against hair demonstration, but is it possible for charge transfer to occur without "rubbing". For example, if a strip of vinyl were simply held firmly against a strip of cotton without any relative motion, and the strips were then sepparated (also without any relative motion other than the motion required for separation), would charge transfer take place to the same extent as if the two strips were rubbed on one another? Thanks.
