Spin Coating a Dvd - Query

I would like to know why a bottom of the range spin coater is so expensive - a standard dvd rom drive @ $60.00 can rotate at the required speed. What is it that makes a spin coater so expensive? Has anyone heard of someone making their own spin coater?
