Snaps to BigH!

Howard's letter to ASCE's Civil Engineering magazine's editors was published in this month's issue. In particular, Howard points out that floating raft foundations, while a good solution for the project under discussion (from an article published in a previous issue), are by no means "innovative", as claimed in the previous issue. To wit, Howard provides quite a good bibliography of texts that discuss this type of foundation. Many of the references will no doubt be familiar to frequent readers of BigH's posts on EngTips.

I read that letter but didn't realize it was by BigH. Excellent, BigH. You know your stuff!

Good job, BigH!

I also did not recognize the author.
Very Good!!

BigH, can you attach a copy of your letter or insert the text here?

I think that you can "attach" the file as a picture file by linking to a web page. SRE? Can I send the picture file for you and you attach?

Cheers - and thanks to all.

Thank you SlideRuleEra for allowing us from other continents to have the opportunity to appreciate this nice article from BigH.
It is sad to see that nowadays simple ( and forgotten )foundations solutions can be shown as innovations.
I see more and more projects in France that couls be built on shallow foundations and eventually get piled. That is obviously not satisfactory for an engineer but I believe it is mainly a question of liability for SI contractors which conclusions are not questioned then also for questions of liability. Fortunately we live in rich countries ! It's good anyway to see sometimes well-engineered projects and see that some people can still appreciate it !
