I recieved a drawing that was suppose to have been a TIF, however it has the exentsion .SMF
I do not have any CAD programs, just ADOBE, Windows picture/fax viewer and PAINT. None of this will open it, nor any of the viewers I have tried today. Any ideal what I need to convert this into something I can view and edit?

(it will ne Monday before I can asked to have it resent)

I have been most of the day. I've down loaded and tried way too many viewers. I tried a pdf converter that was suppose to convert any thing. I tried the search here also. So either, it is not my day, or this file is corrupt

Is SMF some CAD format I have not been able to find today

I really wish I could post the file. Even though It does not contain any new technology, the email did come with a page long warning concerning properity info and distrubition limitations.

the file is an E size drawing from an US utility. the prior discussion and even email it was attached stated it was a scanned TIF. Funny thing is, it is only 330kb.

I'll just wait till Monday and ask them to resend.

being corrupt could be possible. Ajack1, I downloaded all 6 of those programs with no luck. the SERIF, did give a "corrupt file" error message. I'm now worried I've effected my computer, even though I ran uninstall afterwards

I am not familar with looking at code, but I did opened it with Word and excel, but did not reconize any pattern or see any hints to what it could be.

The amount of time I've put into opening this file exceeds the expected time I was going to charge to write a solution to thier problem. :)

Did you try to make a copy and change it to a .tiff extension and then open it?
I have had times where I needed to change file extensions to make it through virus scanners,etc...

First, I do appreaciate all the "try this".

I did try last night and then repeated after your suggestion (that's why it took awhile to reply). Besides TIF, i tried pdf, bmp, jpg. I then saved it without an extension (and shorten its name) and went through all my "open with" options; adobe, paint, windows fax, windows photo veiwer, word, note, excel, power point.

given this is from the electronic files of an US utility (Exelon) I would think it should have been a common format (first time with this customer though)

I have started written the solution for them in generic terms, but I hate providing info on how to solve, but rather provide a specific answer

here is the first few lines of the file when view in text. the "c:\..." makes me think this is an internal link for the customer's drawing file.
