The world wide web offers you the ability to publish software and information at very low cost. The trick is in getting clients who 1) can find you and 2) who trust you. Focus on the basics - PROVIDE VALUE. Often I find lots of fluff on the web - the sites that provide value succeed.
The art of design requires face to face and hands-on work. Experience is a must so you need to get into a field that allows you to work from the ground up. You also must be close to your customers. Many contract engineers succeed because they are willing to live on the road. They also succeed because they keep in touch with their acquantences, peers and past clients.
Good luck!
