Shear strength of fastener in plywood

Apr 25, 2024

Does anyone know of a good reference to calculate the shear strength of a single fastener in shear in plywood? I tried looking at NDS, but nothing really comes to mind. Trying to connect a light gauge strap to sheathing. The tables for the sheathing in NDS don't really apply because the way the load is applied, the plywood sheathing transfers load to to the strap, not a piece of framing below. To simplify the question here, Imagine I'm trying to analyze simply the strength of a single bolt/nail/screw in plywood

Probably not exactly what you are looking for but see table below. I've used these values before when designing plywood gussets that are attached to 2x framing....

I wholeheartedly disagree. The stud is a crucial part of that load path, unless you have sheathing with no horizontal joints. Possible in a single story building, not in anything larger. If this is between floors, you either take the uplift from the stud into the strap and into the stud below, or the same but using sheathing (SDPWS have some example details for using sheathing this way.)

If I'm misunderstanding your condition, please post a sketch.
