I understood that "settle-out pressure" is the maximum pressure in the compressor/system when the compressor is shut-down but I did not understand how this occurs (e.g. How this pressure is developed?). Can anybody help me?

Thanks

I have heard this used for Recycle compressors, where the system makes a loop back to the suction.

While running, the compressor will have a high discharge pressure, which drops thru some equipment, back to a lower pressure at the suction.

If the compressor trips off, the pressure will settle out at some point between the discharge and suction pressure. Where it settles out is dependant upon the relative volumes of equipment in the loop.

If you have a recycle valve connnecting discharge to suction that fails open then the the compressor will stabilize at a single "settle out" pressure when the compressor shuts down. You can calculate the total mass in the system at the time of shutdown and assume it settles to a final pressure w/ no loss of mass.
