Selecting a specific steel

I am looking for a book, handbook, or person who can tell/teach me about the methodology required to select a steel for a component made from a casting. I have the static and dynamic analysis, but don't know how to "design" the required material to fabricate my parts.

You could contact ASM (Amer. Society for Metals) and see what they have. Also consider design courses at a local college.

It is hard to summarize what a metallurgical engineer learns in 4+ years at university into a "checklist" for design. One good reference on this subject is Materials Selection in Mechanical Design by M.F. Ashby. You also can find educational materials, including self-study classes in "Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist", at the ASM International website:

I'd like to add to CoryPad's comment and state that it goes even beyond the college learning. Until I was fully exposed to design criteria and planning at work, I don't think I had a good handle.

CoryPad gives you a really good reference in mechanical design book as well as the link to ASM (same to MetalGuy). I don't know where you're designing, but another book to look at for ideas:

"Materials Selection for Hydrocarbon and Chemical Plants" by David Hansen and Robert Puyear.
