In a previous post I described an application where i want to use high strength threaded fasteners connected to a tapped steel plate. Pretty much all the design guidance I have seen applies to bolted connections secured with nuts. This is not my situation.

Is there any screw-specific design guidance out there?

All assistnace is appreciated.

Try the Hilti Website ( or ( They have a technical library section with a technical manuals / catalogues section. You will probably have to register but they have design info for shot fired nails, self tapping screws etc.

I think you're mainly concerned about stress etc however in case it's of use.

The situation you're describing is I believe what is classed as a fixed fastener situation.

The tolerances required to make it work are different from a floating fastener (nut & bolt).

Fixed Fastener Assembly - Where the fastener is held in place (restrained) into one of the components of the assembly.

Fixed Fastener Formula H = F + 2T or T = (H-F)/2
Where:
T = position tolerance diameter
H = MMC of the clearance hole
F = MMC of the fastener

Or if the positional tolerances aren't the same on both sets of holes:

H = F +T1 + T2

This is in appendix B of ASME Y14.5
