In solidworks I can create properties or attributes in a drawing template that will be linked to which ever part I insert as a view.

Is this possible in SE? I'd like to be able to insert the .par or .asm in to a draft and the title block auto populate, and also if adding a 2nd sheet I'd like the sheet to auto update showing I added a new sheet.

How would I set up a template like this…is there any decent how-to's out there? I never seem to find much but a site or 2 on SE…tons on SW though.

Any thoughts? THX!

Adam,

You can use the property text command to be able to fill out the title block.

You can also set it up to change the sheet numbers based upon how many sheets you have in your drawing.

If you were to look through the help, there is some information on this.

I started to look thru help but it didn't seem to give me what I wanted to read. I'll check it out again. Thanks for the additional ideas

Adam,

when in a Draft use the Function 'Callout'. On the next panel
press the button that shows an A as icon (Property Text). On
the next window select the radio button 'Index Reference'
scroll down the list and select the item say 'Title'. Press
Select and then OK
Back in te previous window you should see this:

%{Title|R1}

For an expanation Press 'Help' . The above means:
get the Titel property from the file that has a view in the draft
and is the first one ( ..|R1). Press OK and place the callout
anywhere on your draft. USe the buttons in the ribbon bar to eliminate
the leader(s)

As long as there is no view created you will see "Error, no refrence'
Now create the first view from a file. The message will be replaced
by the titel property of your file (or nothing in case it had not
been filled in.

To get the sheetnumber/number of sheets us the property 'Sheet number'
'Number of sheets' but activate the radiso button 'From current file'
You can combine both properties, after selecting the first just select
the next one before leaving with OK. Between the two you may place
a space or a shlash or something that suits your needs.

To have that in all new sheets, do that on your normal.dft *and* on
the background sheet. Don't forget to switch back to the working sheet
before saving the file!

Another tip,

It's better to put all property text on the background sheet of the template. That will make it easier to copy and paste a background sheet for when you want to create different background sheets within the same template.

Toffeet - That makes sense. Good idea.

Dy - thanks for the info, it was a great help.

Im new to SE and this company. They seem to use SE for A LOT of 2D drafting. And because of this they haven't spent much time on setting up templates linking properties.

Is the 2D Model function a big reason some like or purchase SE, because its similar to Acad and its viewports?

Also instead of a new thread, what are the top data management software's for SE?

And I'm assuming that the "R1" in the property is referencing the view in the order they are place in the draft?

1st view R1
2nd view R2

Adam,

no, R1 is that part that is current(!) the first part
that is brought into the draft. If different part
is brought in it will be R2 and so on. When the first
part is then deleted (all views) the part with R2
will become the index R1 :-(

That’s sort of what I meant. If it’s a different part. NOT views of the same part..
Thx!

Hello ParaCAD,

Regarding the company you are working for, I hope that there isn't any SE seats that are only used for 2D drafting. SE 2D drafting is free and can be downloaded from
Regarding data management you have 3 options. (Bottom to top)

1. Revision Manager (It is already built into SE, right click on any SE file in Windows Explorer and select "Open with Revision Manager". This is a must use tool for any SE user.

2. Insight Connect (Comes free with SE, runs on Windows Server 2003 and make use of Windows Sharepoint and Windows SQL Server, see "Solid Edge Insight" in
3. Teamcenter Express (Is not free, runs on Windows Server 2003 and make use of Windows SQL Server. If there is one software product that is on my wish list for Christmas, this is it. See )

Solid Edge is looking at migrating a lot of AutoCad user to 3D and obviously the first thing they want to show to them is that they can replace AutoCad with SE first and then make them start doing some work in 3D.

It's clear that it's a marketing decision to put a 2D drafting version free because a lot of people will try it and see that for a lot of things it can replace AutoCad. And then SE as a great window to promote it's 3D functionality.

That's the reason why SE is putting a lot of effort in making the use of 2D as much friendly as possible to AutoCad user, think about the viewports from AutoCad and 2D model view for SE.

From my part I appreciate the 2D functionality of SE because I don't need AutoCad anymore to do some basic things like a quick full scale sketch or schematics. I won't try to draw a full building layout with SE though because I don't think it as everything I need for this yet.

That's my 2 cent.
