I would like some advice on a project that I am working on. The scope of the project is to design a reinforced concrete retaining wall along a sloping site (slope 24%). I have tried to use the stepped footing approach but it requires excessive excavation. Can I use a footing inclined parallel to the site slope or a stepped footing with steps that are greater than the thickness of the footing which is suggested by one code? Also, what additional design requirements would there be for either solution or any other solution?

Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE)walls are great for this application. However, you've specifically stated that it is a RC wall that you're dealing with, so perhaps you've studied this alternative. If not check it out.

Qshake,

Thanks for responding to my question but a reinforced concrete wall or a masonary wall is the only option i have.

I am really greatful for any other recommendations you or anyone else would have to make.

Regards.

Is there any reason why you can't use several separate walls (varying footing elevations)with construction joints?

Does anyone have a reasonable poured concrete retaining wall design for a 4' tall wall holding back largely clay soil except 3-4' of backfill dirt?
