Replace clamping with secondary adhesive?

Has anyone ever tried or do you have ideas on ways to replace clamping with a pressure sensitive adhesive? I understand that clamping actually applies a force where an adhesive would simply hold the components in place, but would this be enough?

I was thinking of applying the secondary (clamping) adhesive at a location near the primary adhesive and then putting the two components together. The intent would be the secondary adhesive would hold the components together until the primary structural adhesive was cured. Would this work?

Yes, it will work. It works particularly well where you require a thick bond line where the PSA material acts not only as a fixture but also a shim. It won't work so well if the PSA must resist any significant forces while the other adhesive is curing.

A good example is using double sided foam tape to hold a joint together while RTV silicone cures.

Here is a material that I've used for several machining operations. This material is wax and can be easily removed by using their solvent.

You might want to give these people a call. It looks like some of their transfer adhesives might work.
