Relationship between contact pressure and friction

Hello all,

I am wondering if there is a relationship between friction and Hertz contact pressure defined somewhere. I just can't seem to find it. I could use FE to determine this, but didn't want to waste time if its already been done.

by "friction" do you mean the friction force (obviously related to the normal load) or the CoF (which i thought was independent of the normal load).

You may want to look at the book "Contact Mechanics" by K.L. Johnson. Specifically, Chapter 7 "Tangential Loading and Sliding Contact".

Figure 7.3 at the bottom of the linked page shows stress contours for a specific case as an example.

rb1957, I mean CoF, i.e. One thing I do know is that the surface and sub surface contact stress becomes very important when the CoF is above 0.3. I wondered if anyone knew more about this.

I will also go through your suggestions on literature.

rb1957 is correct that the CoF is supposedly independent of the normal force...that's assuming no deformation of either surface due to the normal force....an assumption that doesn't necessarily hold in practice.

they are independent (as stated, to the third). what are the materials, diameters & lengths, etc.
