I'm trying to find the displacements of the centre of an access cover relative to the fixings around it's edge. The access cover is modelled on a FEM of the full wingbox but my problem is the deflection caused by global wing bending 'swamp' the local deflections on the access panel. How can I remove these global wing bending effects so I can find the local deflections on the access panel caused by the applied air pressures, thermal and wing bending strains?

The easiest way would be to manually adjust the scale of the displacement contour plot to cut off these global displacements so that local ones are more visible. Also some FEA programs allow you to remove selected parts of the model (or element groups) from viewport and display results only for the region of interest.

another day in paradise, or is paradise one day closer ?

In Abaqus/CAE is an option called "Rigid Body Transformation" to remove general movements from the results.
