Raw material cost - PP to PA66

Does anyone know what the difference in cost is for Polypropylene and Nylon66 raw material in the USA?

I have some parts made in the United States at the moment in PP, and am going to ask if it is possible to use PA66. Before I do, I would like to know what sort of premium I am going to be faced with.

I think here in Australia, the cost would be at least double.

Thanks,

Ian.

About double for raw material cost per Kg will be about right, however it will depend a lot on individual grades as additives like GF and FR can narrow the gap as the cost of he base resin becomes a smaller part of the total cost.

Also, PP moulds somewhat slower, but nylon has a higher SG and may need drying. Nylon 6.6 certainly needs tighter control of some moulding parameters, like nozzle temperature and tendency to intermittently freeze drool freeze drool.

Nylon also has issues with property and size change vs moisture uptake, but PP has variable shrinkage and warping problems.

Ian, whereabouts in Aus are you. I know most moulder across Aus as I ha a role marketin engineering plasics nationally for many years.

patprimmer,

Thank you for your response. I have assumed that the difference in cost in the states will be about the same as here in Oz, but am hoping someone on the other side of the pacific can confirm this for me.

I am in Melbourne and although we have many plastic parts they are all moulded by others for us.

Cheers,

Ian.

Will you be at Austplas, 07 to 10/10/08.

I will be there on the PIMA stand for most of the time.

If PP was ok, I would look at PA6 as an alternative to PA6.6. You may be disappointed with the finish you'll get with PA6.6. It's also cheaper with a wider processing window.

Mech. properties for practical purposes the same - just higher temp rating.

Cheers

Harry

Pud is spot on, although these days, 6.6 is almost the same price, but the processing window is much wider for 6.

Thanks Pud & Patprimmer for the thoughts on PA6 verses PA66.

What is the diference in temperature rating for these two Nylons? This wil certainly weigh heavily apon the suitability.

Ferret.
