Question: Installing power line monitoring equipment

I've read the followiong caution on a few commercial power line monitors.

"Caution: Do not install this ddvice on any outlet that does NOT have at least 10 meters of wire between the electrical outlet and the electrical service panel"

Can someone explain the reasoning behind this caution?

Probably about prospective short circuit current. Rather unusual, I think. What device is it?

Often a requirement when MOVs are present in the device. MOVs require impedance in the supply to prevent their destruction during over-voltage transients.

The device is likely CAT II rated. CAT III would be needed on for measurements on the service panel. See the power point for a good explanation of the transient voltage withstand ratings for meters.
