It took us a while to find the cause of this problem, so I thought I'd document it for prosperity. We're running sub-vi's in a Labview routine, and it wouldn't work because one of the sub-vi's popped up a window every time, asking us to save a *.mdi file.
Eventually, we worked out that in the top menu of the front page (I don't remember which pull down), there is an option called "print on completion", which had been selected. De-selecting it fixed the problem.
