Hi All,
We have not worked with molded gears in the past. We will soon, and are starting the conversation about how to work it into an overzealous QC department. We don't currently have any gear inspection expertise. We have lots of experience with other precision measurement systems, and routinely measure our molded parts to better than .0001". Just not gears.

One option for production involves having gearboxes assembled outside our facility, and simply inspect the functionality in our QC department. (we are not molding these in house- everyone is afraid of plastic gears!)

These are small, light weight units. the intended use is for precision handheld equipment.

The question then becomes: any suggestions in how to achieve a good inspection method?
our idea so far:
"proof" test some quantity/ batch
measure backlash
measure no-load torque

thanks

Ha I have zero experience with plastic gears, however plenty with steel gears.

A good source of information are the AGMA
Specifications. So apparently a close tolerange measuring instrament.

Two methods to inspect gears
Analytical verification of each attributes
Or verification at a set center distance with a master gear disigned for that gear.

The precision of the gear AGMA 2015 or AGMA
2000 depends on the application.
The back lash will depend on the pitch velicity, and required load.
And if a precision timing is required.
Test the assembly and record if it is precise enough.

For the gears alone, this might be interesting: "double flank roll testing of gears"
