Hello,

Does anyone know what is the appropriate failure criterion to use for plastics? I know that Von Mises is used for ductile material, but I am under the impression that Von Mises is only valid for small strains. With plastics under load having large strains, is the Von Mises criterion still valid?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

The von Mises condition can be used also for large strains, but the predictions are not always accurate. The challenge is to predict the behavior in different loading modes, and the von Mises model does not always work well in this regard.
