Can anyone tell how to go about modifying signals to include pedestrian phases with push buttons on existing crosswalks ?

What kind of information is needed and what manuals looked at ?

Thanks.

The ITE Manual of Traffic Signal Design can give you a basic idea on what goes into a signal plan.

The following is a basic summary of the work involved. You might get more responses if you have a more specific question.

Are you going to hire a contractor to make the changes or will it be done by in-house forces?

If it's an existing signal, you need to figure out where you will mount the new hardware. Does it go on the existing traffic signal posts, or on new poles?

Are you just installing pedestrian buttons to call one of the signal phases? Will the pedestrians cross concurrently with paralell traffic, or is it an exclusive pedestrian phase?

Are you installing pedestrial signal heads as well? Are they incandescent, fiber-optic or LED?

The wire from the detectors and heads needs to be pulled back through the signal conduit to the controller cabinet. We use 14AWG 3 conductor cable for each individual head and button, or a 5 conductor for a signal head/button pairing.

The backboard in the cabinet needs to be rewired to receive inputs from the detectors and provide outputs to the ped heads. A spare loadswitch position would be needed for each pedestrian phase display.

The signal controller would need to be reprogrammed to respond to the pedestrian actuation.

A general list of the pay items and methods of measurement for contract work are:

Pedestrian detector pushbutton/each
One-Way Pedestrian signal head(Incandescent, FO, LED)/each
14 AWG 3 conductor cable/linear foot
or
14AWG 5 conductor cable/linear foot
8 foot aluminum pedestal pole/each
Handhole(at the base of rhe pole)/each
New Underground Conduit(2, 3 inch)/linear foot
Rewire Existing Controller Cabinet(including new load switches)/Lump Sum or each

The plan should contain the existing signal phasing, and the revised phasing plan. The phasing plan should show the display of each signal head (GYR, W, FDW) during each phase interval and during flashing operation.

A phase sequence diagram should show the order of operation of the signal phases.
