Paperspace Modelspace Procedure

Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone has a procedure that details the setting up of paperspace modelspace drawings. I have been given the task of dragging the CAD department into the 21st century but I am not very good at teaching others. The main points I want to address are the 'Page Setup' and the scaling of 'Viewports'. I understand how to do it but would love a detailed step-by-step procedure.

To scale a viewport used to take some math and head-scratching. If you have 2000 or later, double click on the viewport, Properties opens. Either selct a Std scale, or type in your own Custom scale.


To modify the settings of a layout’s page setup (verbatim out of Help)
Click the layout tab for which you want to modify the page setup settings.
Click File menuPage Setup Manager.
In the Page Setup Manager, Page Setups area, select the page setup that you want to modify.
Click Modify.
In the Page Setup dialog box, modify the required settings. Click OK.
In the Page Setup Manager, click Close.

You do not scale a viewport in paper space-instead you scale the drawing within the viewport.

You must know also something about the scale factor(SF). For example a drawing with a scale 1"=50' would have a S.F. of 600(=50*12/1) which is to be applied to scaling your drawing into that viewport via the command Zoom-->Scale-->nXP whereby n=1/sf(this is one method).

The other approach is to open the viewport toolbar and either select the proper scale (or make you own within that tool bar)when you have your viewport opened in paper spcace and model space selected on the bottom tabs.

The SF also has to be applied in model space for linetypes thru the ltscale command, dimensioning either thru the dimscale command or thru the dimensiong dialogue box, and for text such as notes via the scale command or via the text height option within the single line text or multiline text editor.

Any linetype in model space may show as a solid line in paperspace(PS) therefore when in PS invoke the PSLTSCALE and set to zero; then make sure the bottom tab is in Model space and REGEN. All linetype should reveal themselves within that viewport you selected to invoke the command.

For example if you need a text height of 3/8" in paper space than text height in model space would be 3/8*600=225" (or any other SF assigned to any viewport since a drawing may have a variety of viewports with different scales). This principle applies to any text height and scale.

These are fundamentals that you should be thoroughly familiar and I suggest that you try the above on simple drawings first.
