Can files be transferred back and forth between NX 8.0 and nx 8.5? I read that the weld symbols disappearing is a bug that was fixed in NX 8.5 the trouble is our other divisions use 8.0 and sometimes we transfer files. I know the files aren't transferable on major releases but is 8.0 to 8.5 considered a minor revision according to the log file.

That is what I was afraid of. Thanks cowski.

Despite the numbering scheme, BOTH NX 8.0 and NX 8.5 are full-fledged major releases, no different than when you went from NX 5.0 to NX 6.0. The decision to use the X.5 designation, just as was the case with NX 7.0 to NX 7.5, had nothing to do with the technical aspects of the release but was mandated by non-technical criteria. Hopefully we've seen the last of the X.5 releases as they have caused nothing but confusion for both our customers and ourselves. Trust me, if it had been up to development only, it's unlikely that this would have occurred.

It would be great if Siemens enables the possibility to save the file as an older "NX native" version.
For example if I'm using NX8.5 and I want to save it as NX6.0 in order to pass it to somebody with the older version. Like when I'm using Word 2010 and save the document as 2007.
I know I can export it as STEP or other non native formats, but it's not the same.

You can however 'Export' the Parasolid portion of a model, that is the solid and surface objects, by doing just that; saving them in a format that would be compatible with older versions of NX. Just go to...

File -> Export -> Parasolid...

...where you'll be asked to select the bodies, solids and surfaces, that you wish to export as well as the 'target' version of NX that you would like to be able to open this file in, which includes EVERY version of UG/NX back to Unigraphics V8.0, which was released in March 1991, over 22 years ago. Note that models exported using this Parasolid scheme will not include any parameters or feature data, nor any curves or sketches or anything other than the solid and sheet bodies selected.

Asking a CAD program to save to an older version is not the same as a simple word processor program data structure. There are many changes to the organization and formatting of the data file structure, as well as added features that make saving as an older version impractical. Even Word will soamtimes say you will lose some formatting when saving as an older version.
None of the 3 big solid model CAD systems have a true 100% compatible, take everything (sketch, model, surfaces, drafting, drawing, manufacturing) back to an older version.
