I am making a kitchen counter top that is plywood underneath and I want to apply a sheet of copper to the top. Tried it using "System 3" 2 part epoxy and the bond was ok to the wood sustrate but it let loose from the copper. I need to try another approach. Now I have the wood covered with a nice bed of cured epoxy and I want to bond my copper to it. Can anyone suggest a solution? Thanks, Trees12345.

If you can make it look nice, you might try mechanical means. Rivots, screws, and such, and use the epoxy as a sealant rather than an adhesive. However, if you can make the copper EXTREMELY rough with pits and divots, a large amount of epoxy would create its own mechanical bond.

Hopefully the epoxy wasn't too expensive. You have a couple of different options for bonding the copper, and a couple that I would like you to avoid. Promise me that you will not use a silicone based product!! The acetic acid that is released during its cure will corrode the copper. The ways that you can go are with a cyanoacrylate. You will either use a "Methyl" based CA or a "rubber toughened" CA. The other option is a Moisture cure urethane. The urethane will give you a longer working time but will take 24 hours to fully cure. For most other adhesive solutions, you will need to score the surfaces.

Good luck, John Schrock
