Name that Polymer! I'm stumped! 2

Hello!

Just trying to figure out what the makeup of this plastic is, as a environmental engineer this falls outside of my knowledge. Can anyone tell me the specifics on what type of plastic this is?

It's for holding sheets of paper making a binder, please see link: Link

I tried looking it up via the UPC code and on Thomasnet.com, but couldn't find anything - if no one can identify specifically what type it is can someone point me in the right direction.

I see products mentioned include the sheet cover protectors; also the patent it explicitly states polypropylene for the sheet cover protector, but for the actual clamp it says "thermoplastic material selected from the group consisting of polystyrene, polypropylene, polyvinylchloride and nylon."

I tried the burn test and it looks to be General Purpose Polystyrene (GPPS)

Ethyl cellulose nitrate: burn rate = "rapid". Love it.

It's possible that it's some sort of mixture, since polystrene, by itself, is probably too rigid for this application.

Might be HIPS - a bit less stiff = more toughness.

Now I am seeing "Virgin PVC" see here:

I thought I knew now I am lost... If anyone could "diagnose" what type of plastic this is I would be happy to mail you a piece. Or any other suggestions - there's got to be someone out there that knows exactly what kind of plastic makeup this is.

Yes, GPPS is too brittle for that. More likely HIPS.

The clamps I've used, or rather, my kids used, look to have similar characteristics to PS, so HIPS makes sense. The clamps are much harder and stiffer than what I think PVC might be like with that thin a section.

Quick check: PVC won't sustain a flame, HIPS will burn merrily with yellow flame and plenty of soot. Don't sniff burning PVC unless you want your sinuses rinsed with HCl!
