Moment Frame Connection

Hi,

All the moment connections I have seen involved welding a beam between the flanges of a Wide Flange column. I understand that this is the typical condition because the column (most of the time) extends up in the structure.

My question is in a single floor moment frame, it is necessary for the beam to be welded between the flanges of the columns? To put it another way, can the beam extend OVER the columns and column is actually welded to the beam flanges?

Thanks, Mike

Yes, for one story buildings it is quite common to create rigid connections by extending the beam over the columns.

I agree--just make sure you can transfer the moment into the column flanges. You may need four stiffener plates--one each side of the beam web, above each column flange.

This can be done as WillisV and DaveAtkins say...I'm just wondering about this kind of connection in regards to seismic pre-qualified connections.

Hi I'm Lathan
I just wonder the presence of fastener holes in beam flanges of a moment resisting frame connection does really affect the flexural capacity of the beam member (usuallt I-sections)?

Thanks

If you have AISC manual, check page 4-129. A standard “beam over column detail” is on bottom of the page.
